Exfoliation for Beard Growers

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. For beard growers, it's especially important because beard hair traps dead skin, leading to clogged follicles, beardruff, ingrown hairs, and a dull, flaky appearance beneath the beard.

Benefits of Regular Exfoliation

  • Prevents follicle blockages that can cause ingrown hairs

Reduces beardruff by removing accumulated dead skin

  • Improves beard oil absorption by clearing the skin surface
  • Stimulates blood circulation, which supports follicle health
  • Keeps the skin beneath your beard healthy and clear

Types of Exfoliation

Physical exfoliation: Using a beard brush, facial scrub, or exfoliating cloth to manually remove dead skin cells — best done 1–2x per week

Chemical exfoliation: Using acids like salicylic acid (BHA) or glycolic acid (AHA) to dissolve dead skin cells — gentler and can be done more frequently

Brush exfoliation: Daily use of a boar bristle beard brush provides light, ongoing physical exfoliation

How to Exfoliate Under Your Beard

  • Dampen your beard and skin with warm water
  • Apply a small amount of facial scrub or exfoliating wash
  • Use your fingertips or a brush to work in circular motions under the beard

Rinse thoroughly and follow with beard oil

Thalidor's Teaching

Don't over-exfoliate. Twice a week is enough for most men. Over-exfoliation strips the skin's protective barrier and causes dryness, redness, and irritation.
