Beard hair, like all body hair, goes through a natural growth cycle. Understanding these stages helps you set realistic expectations, troubleshoot growth issues, and make better decisions about your beard care routine.
Anagen (Growth Phase): Active growth phase lasting 2–6 years for beard hair. The longer this phase, the longer your beard can grow. Genetics determine the length of your anagen phase.
Catagen (Transition Phase): A short 2–3 week phase where the follicle shrinks and detaches from the blood supply. Hair stops growing and prepares to shed.
Telogen (Resting Phase): The follicle rests for 3–4 months before the old hair sheds and a new anagen phase begins. Up to 15% of your hairs are in this phase at any time.
Genetics, age, testosterone levels, diet, sleep quality, and stress all affect beard growth rate and density. The average beard grows about half an inch per month. Patience and consistency in your care routine are your greatest assets.
Don't judge your beard at 4 weeks. Most men who give up on their beards quit right before the 3-month mark when coverage and fill really start to improve.
